San Antonio Mayor Faces Budget Deficit

San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is calling for drastic measures to address the city’s ballooning budget deficit, including reconsidering funding for a new $1.3 billion Spurs arena and sunsetting a workforce development program. The city’s weak-mayor form of government, however, limits Jones’ power to make these changes alone.

Budget Deficit Woes

The city is facing a $158 million budget deficit, which Jones attributes to ‘years and years of poor decision-making.’ Despite her efforts to address the issue, Jones lacks the support of her colleagues, who have accused her of being disingenuous and not transparent in her budget efforts.

Council members have expressed frustration with Jones’ go-it-alone approach, and some have called for her to abandon efforts to defund the Spurs arena and Ready to Work job training program. The council members argue that these programs are essential for the city’s economic development and should not be cut to balance the budget.

The Spurs arena funding has been a contentious issue, with Jones proposing a citywide vote to reaffirm the arena investment. However, she lacks the support of her colleagues, who say they were not consulted on her plans.

Economic Development

Council members have stressed that economic development is the key to addressing the city’s budget woes, rather than cutting costs. They argue that the Ready to Work program and the Spurs arena are essential for attracting new businesses and investments to the city.

The COPS/Metro Alliance, a faith-based group, has come out in support of the Ready to Work program, which they consider one of the city’s most significant investments in human capital. The group has urged the city not to cut funding for the program, citing its importance for the city’s economic development.
