Philadelphia launches first parallel‑parking championship with 20 local competitors

Philadelphia residents will soon witness a uniquely local showdown: the inaugural Parallel Parking Association Championship. Organized by the Philadelphia Parallel Parking Association (PPPA), the event will feature twenty of the city’s most skilled drivers battling for the title of best parallel parker.

Contestants announced

The first ten competitors have already been introduced. Missy Parks Good, who describes herself as a “parallel parker to my core,” promises to squeeze into the tightest spots. Mary Zheng adds, “I park crazy in a good way,” while a finalist known only as Tizzy emphasizes precision: “You gotta get in where you can fit in.” Other entrants include One‑Shot Mar, who boasts, “You name the neighborhood, you name the spot, and I will get this car in it,” and Cokomo Joe, who has been parallel parking since age eight.

Representing the city’s working class, the PPPA also fielded “Dark Transit,” a SEPTA bus driver who claims daily mastery of parallel parking a full‑size bus. Grandmom Jackie, a 90‑year‑old participant, says she has never had an accident and parks “perfectly.” The diverse lineup reflects Philadelphia’s neighborhood spirit and the competition’s aim to celebrate both skill and community.

Rules and prizes

Contestants must rely on traditional techniques—no backup cameras are permitted, a rule PPPA commissioner Adam Wodka says preserves the “old‑school” nature of the challenge. Prizes include a trophy, a piece of curb, bragging rights, and a modest $76 stipend to cover a potential future parking ticket.

Judging will be conducted by neighborhood voters, beginning with the city’s northwest region. The final batch of competitors will be selected through this grassroots voting process, reinforcing the event’s community‑focused ethos.

Event details

The championship is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, at Headhouse Plaza in Center City. Organizers encourage residents to attend, cheer for their favorite drivers, and enjoy a light‑hearted celebration of a skill that every Philadelphian relies on daily.

With the city’s notorious parking challenges, the competition offers a playful reminder of the everyday expertise that keeps traffic moving and neighborhoods thriving. Whether you’re a seasoned driver or simply appreciate a well‑executed park, the Parallel Parking Association Championship promises a memorable afternoon for all Philadelphians.
