A new anti-human trafficking awareness campaign, ‘Can You See Me?’, has launched in San Antonio. The campaign features a digital billboard on Highway 281 and is part of a nationwide effort to shine a light on the realities of human trafficking.
Local Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking
The San Antonio Police Department is partnering with anti-trafficking nonprofit A21, the National Human Trafficking Hotline, and other organizations to raise awareness about human trafficking. Acting San Antonio Police Chief Jesse Salame emphasized the importance of public awareness in combating the crime.
The campaign aims to inform both people experiencing exploitation and the public about resources available to help. A similar campaign launched in Texas in 2019 led to a 30% increase in contacts to the National Human Trafficking Hotline over three months.
Recognizing the Signs of Human Trafficking
Courtney Litvak, a survivor of human trafficking, said that traffickers often rely on tactics that aren’t immediately obvious to bystanders. She encouraged people to look for signs that someone is being controlled by another person, such as not having access to their own identification documents or finances.
To report suspected trafficking, people can call or text the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888, or use the online chat service.
