A 20-year-old Texas Christian University (TCU) student, Luis Andrade, was deported to El Salvador on July 21, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Andrade was arrested in Arlington in June for public lewdness and resisting arrest, and spent 11 days in ICE detention before his deportation.
Background
Andrade entered the United States in 2009 at the age of three. An immigration judge ordered his removal in March 2010. Andrade was a valedictorian of his high school class in 2024 at Sam Houston High School in Arlington.
ICE stated that attending school in the United States does not confer lawful immigration status, and that Andrade was present in the country illegally. Andrade did not apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and was arrested for committing criminal offenses.
Reaction
Eric Cedillo, an immigration attorney and law professor at Southern Methodist University (SMU), said that Andrade’s deportation shows how strict immigration rules are at the moment. Cedillo believes that Andrade likely chose voluntary deportation instead of detention.
Andrade’s fraternity started a GoFundMe to pay for his legal fees. Recent data from ICE shows that more than 350,000 people have been deported from the United States since October 2025.
