Sabalenka eyes historic US Open three‑peat, willing to give up world No. 1 spot

New York (Reuters) – Aryna Sabalenka told reporters on Tuesday that a third consecutive US Open championship would be a greater reward than retaining the world No. 1 ranking. The Belarusian’s position at the top of the WTA ladder could slip if she loses in the quarter‑finals, allowing Elena Rybakina to move ahead.

Semifinal win puts Sabalenka on track for a “three‑peat”

Sabalenka advanced to the semifinals by defeating fellow Belarusian Linda Noskova 7‑6(1) 3‑6 7‑6(10‑7). The hard‑fought victory brings her one step closer to a “three‑peat” – a feat not achieved at the US Open since Serena Williams captured titles from 2012‑14.

“Yes, I’ll be more than happy. A ‘three‑peat’ sounds great,” Sabalenka said. “I’m just super happy that I’ve put myself in the position where I have a chance to go for three‑peat, even though I’m still far away from that.”

Ranking pressure from Rybakina

World No. 2 Elena Rybakina can overtake Sabalenka in the rankings with a quarter‑final win over China’s Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday. Sabalenka acknowledged the ranking battle but emphasized that her focus remains on the title pursuit.

“What I learned from Australia is it’s really important to shut down all of the noise and having that at the back of your mind,” Sabalenda added, recalling her loss to Madison Keys in the 2025 Australian Open final after two straight titles.

Potential final showdown

If both players continue their runs, Sabalenka and Rybakina could meet in Saturday’s final, renewing a rivalry that has already produced memorable matches, including the Australian Open final earlier this year.

Sabalenka’s calm confidence reflects a seasoned champion who knows the mental challenges of chasing a third straight Grand Slam. “Nothing wrong about that, just as long as you’re focusing on yourself, as long as you’re ready to fight, basically,” she said.

What a three‑peat would mean

Achieving three consecutive US Open titles would place Sabalenka among an elite group of women’s tennis greats. The accomplishment would also underscore her resilience after the disappointment of the Australian Open loss and demonstrate her ability to perform under pressure on the sport’s biggest stages.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely as the semifinals unfold, eager to see whether Sabalenka can convert her strong play into historic glory or whether Rybakina’s surge will reshape the top of the rankings.
