Maryland teen missing for 49 years identified after DNA breakthrough

After a 49‑year search, investigators have finally identified the remains of a Maryland teenager whose disappearance has haunted her family and community for half a century. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) announced that the skeletal remains found on Dec. 29, 1977, near a Firestone plant in Wilson County belong to Cindy Marcell Blizzard, who was 15 when she ran away from her home in Monkton, Maryland.

How the case was solved

When the remains were first recovered, the chief medical examiner classified the death as undetermined, but the circumstances suggested possible foul play, prompting investigators to treat the case as a homicide. Early efforts focused on dental‑record comparisons, which yielded no match and left the case cold for decades.

In 2010, a state anthropologist reopened the investigation and submitted the victim’s teeth for DNA testing. The resulting profile was entered into national crime and missing‑persons databases, yet no matches were found at that time.

In 2024, SBI’s Cold Case Investigative Team applied modern forensic tools unavailable in the 1970s. A special investigator secured approval for advanced DNA testing, and a bone sample was sent to a forensic laboratory. Technicians extracted genetic material and built a profile by analyzing hundreds of thousands of genetic markers. A commercial genealogy service then used the profile to locate potential relatives, pointing to a missing 15‑year‑old from Monkton.

Family and community response

Officials confirmed the identity as Cindy Marcell Blizzard, who vanished in the spring of 1977 after leaving home. Her death remains unsolved, and the investigation is ongoing. The breakthrough has brought a measure of closure to her relatives, who have endured years of uncertainty.

“We finally have a name and a face for our loved one,” said a family spokesperson. “While we still seek answers about what happened to Cindy, knowing who she was brings us a measure of peace.”

What’s next

The SBI continues to treat the case as a homicide and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted through the SBI Cold Case Tip Line at 919‑582‑TIPS, via email at [email protected], or by contacting the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office at 252‑237‑2118.

This resolution underscores the power of modern forensic science and genealogy in solving cold cases, offering hope that other long‑standing mysteries may also be resolved.
