U.S. Companies in China Show Growing Optimism After Trump‑Xi Summit

American businesses operating in China are feeling a noticeable lift in confidence, according to the latest annual survey from the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham Shanghai). The poll, conducted among 262 member firms, found that 58% of respondents are optimistic about their five‑year outlook – a jump of 17 percentage points from last year and the end of a four‑year stretch of historically low sentiment.

Positive shift linked to Trump‑Xi dialogue

Chamber chairman Jeffrey Lehman said the improvement reflects a “mood shift” among members after the successful May summit in Beijing, where President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to pursue a constructive relationship based on fairness and reciprocity. Lehman added that the leaders’ commitment to strategic stability was “very reassuring” and helped drive the positive results now seen across the survey.

Stronger financial performance fuels confidence

Financial results also played a role. Seventy‑eight percent of surveyed companies reported that their China operations were profitable last year – the highest level since 2019. This profitability boost, combined with the diplomatic progress, appears to be encouraging firms to look ahead with greater optimism.

Key challenges and regulatory outlook

While optimism is rising, domestic competition remains the top concern for 68% of respondents, overtaking U.S.–China tensions. Regarding the regulatory environment, 55% now view it as transparent, up seven points from the previous year, though the share expecting it to become more open slipped slightly to 39%.

Investment plans for 2025‑2026

Investment intentions are also shifting. In 2025, 28% of companies increased their China investment – the strongest share in four years. Looking ahead to 2026, 31% plan to raise their investment levels, while only 14% anticipate cutting back.

Implications for U.S. trade and local economies

The survey’s findings suggest that U.S. firms see a more stable trade environment and are preparing to expand, which could translate into job growth and increased economic activity both in China and back home. As the Trump administration continues to prioritize fair trade and strategic stability, the outlook for American businesses abroad appears increasingly positive.

AmCham Shanghai will release its full China Business Report later this month, offering deeper insight into how U.S. companies are navigating the evolving market landscape.
