A Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki, Greece to Memmingen, Germany was forced to make an emergency landing after a window dislodged, partially sucking a passenger out. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff on Friday.
Investigation Underway
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the plane was a Boeing 737 NG and that a window broke on the flight. The cause of the broken window is still unclear.
Local media in Greece reported that a piece of the engine broke off and smashed a window, causing the cabin to decompress and sucking one passenger partially out of the window. The plane returned to Thessaloniki and passengers were able to exit the plane safely.
The FAA stated that it is ready to support the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the investigation.
Similar Incident in 2018
A similar incident occurred in 2018 on a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 NG, where a fan blade in the engine broke and caused a window to break, resulting in the death of a passenger.
