Russian drone hits Ukrainian train as ex‑CIA chief and former UK PM watch nearby

Ukrainian authorities say a Russian drone attacked a passenger train at Yahodyn station, a key border crossing just two kilometers from Poland, on Sunday. The strike occurred while former CIA director David Petraeus was waiting on a separate train at the same station, and shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials had passed through.

What happened at Yahodyn

Ukrainian Railways reported that the diplomatic train left Yahodyn early because of the “constant threat of Russian strikes.” By the time the drone hit the civilian train, the diplomatic train had already crossed into Poland. Petraeus’s train remained at the station, according to a statement from Ukrainian Railways, which has not yet confirmed whether the drone was aimed at his train or the civilian one.

Official reactions

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attack, calling it “Putin’s terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO.” Russia’s Defense Ministry, citing state news agency TASS, said its forces were targeting “railway infrastructure facilities in western Ukraine that are used to transport military cargoes from European countries.”

Former British Prime Minister Johnson, a vocal supporter of Ukraine, posted on X that he could not understand “what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive.” He described the incident as a “random and senseless attack” that Ukrainians endure daily. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who was also traveling near the border, shared a video of the drone strike and noted that the train hit was not his own.

Broader context

The attack follows a recent pattern of Russian strikes near the Polish border, a critical corridor for Western military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Earlier on Sunday, a Russian drone also hit a gas station in Yahodyn, briefly shutting the crossing. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned that such attacks represent a wider security threat to both Ukraine and neighboring Poland.

British Defense Minister Wes Streeting called the incidents a “stark reminder” of the daily dangers Ukrainians face, emphasizing that reckless attacks on civilian infrastructure close to Poland underline the broader threat posed by Russia.

International security conference

Petraeus and the European officials were in Kyiv for the Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference, a gathering focused on regional security and cooperation. Their presence underscores the continued Western commitment to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing aggression.

Implications for U.S. policy

While the United States is not directly mentioned in the incident, the involvement of a former senior U.S. intelligence official highlights the deep ties between Washington and Kyiv. The Trump administration has repeatedly affirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and has called for a strong response to Russian aggression.

As the situation develops, Ukrainian officials continue to assess the damage and investigate whether the drone was deliberately targeting the diplomatic train or the civilian one. The incident adds pressure on NATO allies to consider additional measures to deter further Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.
