U.S. Airman Rescued After Iran Shoot‑Down Shares Harrowing Details

In a candid interview on “60 Minutes,” the unnamed airman—identified only by his mission call sign “Bravo”—revealed the brutal reality of his rescue after his F‑15 was shot down over Iran in April. The story underscores the bravery of the service members who risked their lives to bring him home.

Injuries and a perilous descent

Bravo said his parachute was damaged when the aircraft was hit, forcing him to manually pull loose pieces of the canopy while free‑falling. “It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen,” he recalled. The fall broke his back, an arm and a shoulder, left him with a sprained ankle and caused facial scrapes.

Survival on a 7,000‑foot ridge

After ejecting, Bravo and the weapon‑systems officer evaded Iranian forces and hiked up a 7,000‑foot ridge with only a pistol, a communication device and a tracking beacon. The pilot was rescued within hours, but Bravo remained hidden for 50 hours, sheltering in a mountain crevice while awaiting help.

Massive rescue operation

The Pentagon mobilized hundreds of personnel, including Army Delta Force, Navy SEAL Team Six, Air Force pararescue operators and CIA operatives. A deception campaign was launched to confuse Iranian forces, who had placed a bounty on the airman’s capture. U.S. aircraft dropped bombs to clear the area before the rescue team could reach Bravo.

Declassified video released by the Pentagon showed pararescue operators moving toward Bravo’s location. When they arrived, he declined to share their exact words, but expressed profound gratitude, saying the moment was “one of the greatest moments of my life” and that he could only say “thank you”.

Equipment loss and recovery

During the operation, two MC‑130J special‑operations transport aircraft were damaged and later destroyed to prevent them from falling into Iranian hands. All 90‑plus special operators were briefly stranded but were eventually rescued and flown out on replacement aircraft.

Official response

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell called CNN’s reporting on internal plans for the interview “a complete lie” and emphasized that participation was a personal decision for each pilot. He added that the Department took great care to protect operational security, sources and methods.

Context and significance

The rescue highlights the United States’ commitment to bringing home its service members, even in hostile territory. It also demonstrates the coordination between the Department of Defense and intelligence agencies to safeguard American lives while maintaining secrecy.

While the airmen remain unnamed for security reasons, their story serves as a testament to the courage of those who serve and the lengths the nation will go to protect them.
