The training involved at least four Russian and Chinese generals and included a three-week session focused on radiological, chemical, and biological protection at a military facility in Beijing in November. The training also covered topics such as chemical reconnaissance, radiation reconnaissance, and protecting ventilation systems from contamination.
The inclusion of radiological, biological, and chemical warfare training underlined the strategic nature of the exchanges, according to European officials. The training has caused alarm in Europe, with the European Union foreign policy chief stating that the bloc had confirmed the training had taken place and was now assessing the implications.
Response from China and Russia
China’s foreign ministry has denied the allegations, stating that its stance on the Ukraine crisis had remained consistent. Russia’s defence ministry has not responded to requests for comment, but a senior lawmaker has dismissed the report as ‘complete nonsense’. The Kremlin has also complained about ‘false information’ published in the West.
