Rookie Chris Bell Returns to Practice, Boosting Miami Dolphins Receiving Corps

Miami Gardens, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins’ wide‑receiver room got a welcome addition on Tuesday as rookie Chris Bell participated in his first full‑team practice since being activated from the non‑football injury list. Bell, a third‑round pick out of Louisville, has been rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in November of last year.

Bell’s First Practice

Wearing a red non‑contact jersey, Bell took part in individual drills on Monday and Tuesday before joining the 11‑on‑11 team session on Tuesday. He ran a handful of routes and said, “It feels great. I haven’t played football in a little minute, so my first practice I was a little nervous, but I’m just out there getting my feet wet and getting back to the swing of things.”

Recovery Timeline

Coach Jeff Hafley emphasized that the Dolphins are not rushing Bell back. While Bell has been running and cutting, he still needs clearance for tackling before he can be considered for game action. Hafley confirmed Bell will sit out Thursday’s joint practice with the New York Giants and will not play in Saturday’s preseason game. “He worked really hard at it, but there’s still a lot of steps to go, so let’s just see how he progresses,” Hafley said.

Young Receiving Group

Bell joins two other 2024 draft picks in the Dolphins’ receiving corps: Caleb Douglas, also a third‑round selection, and Kevin Coleman Jr., taken in the fifth round. Douglas has emerged as a reliable target for new quarterback Malik Willis, while Coleman impressed with a pair of touchdown catches in Tuesday’s practice. Bell, a larger‑framed 228‑pound receiver, offers the team a physical presence that could be valuable in both the passing game and blocking schemes.

“I feel like we’ve got a good receiver room,” Bell said. “The young guys are coming along, right with the vets. I would say we’ve got a good chance to be something special, so y’all just wait and see.”

College Production

During his time at Louisville, Bell amassed 2,166 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, showcasing the size and play‑making ability that caught the Dolphins’ attention. He noted that his stature allows him to match up favorably against smaller defensive backs, and he takes pride in his blocking as much as his route running.

Coach Hafley echoed that sentiment, stating, “Our receivers are going to block. No block, no rock.” The emphasis on blocking aligns with the Dolphins’ broader offensive philosophy of using versatile receivers who can contribute in multiple phases of the game.

Looking Ahead

Bell remains uncertain whether he will be ready for the season opener in Las Vegas on September 13, but his return to practice signals progress in his rehabilitation. The Dolphins will continue to monitor his health and timing with the quarterbacks as the preseason unfolds.

With a young, physically diverse receiving group taking shape, Miami fans have reason to be optimistic about the team’s offensive development heading into the 2026 NFL season.
