Lincoln, Neb. – As the new class moves into residence halls this week, the University of Nebraska‑Lincoln (UNL) unveiled a slate of more than a dozen construction and renovation projects slated for completion by the end of 2026. University officials say the work will improve campus facilities while reducing the visual impact of construction compared with the past two years.
Key projects moving forward
Assistant Vice President for Facilities Planning and Capital Programs Wendy Johnson explained that the university’s construction schedule has been reorganized to finish major work before the fall semester peaks. “Because of big projects wrapping up, it will be a lot less construction people see on campus than what they’ve seen the last couple of years,” Johnson said.
The announced projects include:
- Westbrook Music Building – new performance and rehearsal spaces for the College of Fine Arts.
- Pershing Military and Naval Science Building – upgraded classrooms and labs for ROTC programs.
- Mueller Tower – a new academic tower housing engineering labs and faculty offices.
- Andersen Hall – renovation of existing classrooms and student study areas.
- Rodeo arena – expanded seating and improved livestock facilities for the university’s rodeo team.
- Sidewalks and concrete work – new pedestrian pathways across campus to enhance safety.
- Nebraska Union – interior upgrades, additional dining options and modernized meeting rooms.
- Bob Devaney Sports Center – new seating, locker rooms and a refreshed fan experience.
- Lied Center for Performing Arts – acoustic improvements and backstage enhancements.
- Memorial Stadium – upgraded seating, concourse renovations and upgraded restrooms.
- Morrill Hall – interior renovations to support administrative functions.
- Bowlin Stadium – new seating and upgraded lighting for the baseball program.
In addition to new buildings, the university will install new lockers, replace flooring in several high‑traffic areas, and add seating throughout campus commons. The projects are a mix of new construction, major renovations and targeted infrastructure upgrades.
Impact on students and the community
University officials emphasized that the timing of the projects is intended to minimize disruption for students, faculty and staff. By completing the bulk of the work before the end of the calendar year, UNL hopes to present a more welcoming campus environment for the incoming class and returning residents.
Local businesses anticipate increased activity as construction crews and university personnel purchase supplies and services from Lincoln vendors. The university also expects the upgraded facilities to attract future students and events, bolstering the city’s economy.
Looking ahead
UNL’s facilities department will continue to monitor progress and provide regular updates to the campus community. The university plans to hold a town‑hall meeting later this fall to gather feedback from students and residents on the completed projects and any future improvements.
With the new construction schedule in place, UNL aims to balance growth with a campus experience that supports academic excellence, student life and community partnership.
