Members of the Rockwall County Criminal District Attorney’s office recently teamed up with Sleep in Heavenly Peace and the Rotary Club of Rockwall for a community service project building and delivering beds to area children in need.
Local Effort to Provide Beds for Children
The guiding motto of the non-profit Sleep in Heavenly Peace is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!”, and local chapters from across the country work towards that goal every day. Rockwall Rotary Club members, Noel and Shari Williams, started a local chapter of the organization this past year and recently sent out a call for manpower.
Rockwall County District Attorney and Rotary President Kenda Culpepper then turned to Juvenile Division felony prosecutor Jamie Manion to organize DA’s Office volunteers, and Manion rose to the task. “I knew our work family would jump in to help these kids,” she said. “Our office is filled with some of the most incredibly generous people.”
Earlier this summer, the teams gathered at the Royse City Lowe’s to bring in donations of new bedding and to cut, drill and sand pieces of wood that would later be assembled into beds for regional children. Then, on a recent Saturday, they assembled and delivered ten of these beds to local families.
“Having a child jump in their brand-new bed and then jump right out of it to hug and thank you…that will be a memory that stays with me a very long time,” said Manion.
“We are incredibly lucky to live in Rockwall County, a place that is blessed by affluence,” said Culpepper. “There are still people in need here, however. It was an easy ask for prosecutors and DA staff to help children in need; particularly those who simply want a bed of their own. I’m so proud of my office’s participation in this wonderful endeavor, and I look forward to the next project.”
