The Arkansas Department of Health has confirmed 10 cases of cyclosporiasis in the state so far this year, up from one confirmed case last week. Dr. Austin Porter, an epidemiologist for the state, advises people to wash their hands and thoroughly clean fruits and vegetables before consumption.
Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
Cyclosporiasis has been detected in 31 states across the country, including most states bordering Arkansas. Oklahoma has reported 11 cases, Tennessee has seen between 11 and 30 cases, Louisiana between 1 and 10, and Texas between 31 and 80, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 840 cases have been reported in the United States since May 1.
The parasite has been found in fresh produce such as parsley, cilantro, snow peas, mesclun lettuce, spinach, salad mixes, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Less common symptoms include vomiting, body aches, headache, low-grade fever, and other flu-like symptoms.
