Riverhounds hold off Loudoun United 1-0 in rain‑soaked victory at F.N.B. Stadium

Pittsburgh Riverhounds secured a 1‑0 triumph over Loudoun United FC on Saturday at F.N.B. Stadium, moving to an 11‑9‑5 record and holding third place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.

Match highlights

Midfielder Sam Bassett struck eight minutes in with a 25‑yard blast for his sixth goal of the season, giving the Hounds an early lead. Keeper Nico Campuzano recorded his 10th clean sheet of the year after denying Bolu Akinyode’s header in the 15th minute.

Despite a torrential downpour that made the first half difficult, the Riverhounds maintained their defensive shape. Coach Rob Vincent, returning from a suspension, praised the effort but admitted the team was “not satisfied” with the overall performance.

Coach Vincent’s comments

“I don’t feel too satisfied right now,” Vincent said at the post‑match press conference. “We got a little bit lucky tonight. I want us to play better and not rely on luck as the season winds down.” He added that the weather would not be used as an excuse and that the team would take the three points forward.

Player reactions

Campuzano described his first half as “the worst first half all year,” noting the poor field conditions. He later praised his teammates for helping preserve the shutout, especially defensive midfielder Robbie Mertz, who cleared a dangerous cross.

Bassett, named “Modelo Man of the Match,” highlighted the team’s missed opportunities, saying, “We’re happy to get a win, but we’re not happy with our performance. We’ve let points slip away in recent games.”

Standings impact

The victory keeps Pittsburgh within striking distance of second‑place Charleston Battery and maintains a five‑point gap behind conference leader Tampa Bay Rowdies. Detroit City FC, sitting fourth, lost 1‑0 later Saturday, setting up a crucial matchup with the Riverhounds on Sept. 19.

Looking ahead, Pittsburgh will host Louisville City FC in the playoffs if the regular season ends today, while the Hounds aim to improve their play as the season approaches its climax.
