Rising gas and grocery costs strain Central Florida families and food banks

Drivers across Central Florida are feeling the pinch as the average price of gasoline has risen to $4.20 per gallon, according to recent market data. In some neighborhoods the pump price is nearly 20 cents higher than the state average, adding a noticeable burden to daily commutes and errands.

Impact on household budgets

For many families, the higher cost of fuel translates directly into higher grocery bills. “I mean, it’s just crazy,” said one driver who asked to remain anonymous. “I’m not liking the prices. I wish it could go down, not up.” The increase follows a jump from $3.13 per gallon at this time last year, a rise driven in part by ongoing instability in the Middle East and higher crude oil prices that are affecting the regional supply chain.

Food banks see growing demand

Local food assistance organizations are already reporting a surge in need. Wendy Peterson, a volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank in Brevard County, explained, “With the rising cost of food, everyday people can’t afford to buy things in the grocery store.” Rachel Roffman, also with Second Harvest, added, “Families are definitely feeling stretched by the price increases across the board, and it can affect children, seniors, and working families. We’re just trying to step up as much as possible to support them in whatever way we can.” The food bank is using Hunger Action Month to raise awareness and encourage community members to volunteer their time.

Practical tips for saving on fuel

The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends a few straightforward steps to help drivers stretch their dollars further. Reducing air‑conditioning use while driving can improve fuel efficiency, and combining errands into a single trip minimizes unnecessary mileage. These simple habits, while modest, can add up to meaningful savings over time.

Looking ahead

While the current price spike reflects broader global market forces, local leaders and community groups are urging residents to stay vigilant about budgeting and to support one another. Volunteers at food banks and charitable organizations play a crucial role in cushioning the impact of higher living costs for the most vulnerable.

As Central Florida navigates these economic pressures, the combined efforts of concerned citizens, nonprofit groups, and practical advice from organizations like AAA aim to keep families, seniors, and children from being left behind.
