Republicans weigh midterm risks as Iran conflict drives gas prices higher

Republican officials across the nation are confronting a growing dilemma as the Iran conflict stretches into its sixth month. While the war has pushed gasoline prices upward, many GOP candidates fear the economic pain could jeopardize their chances in the 2026 midterm elections.

Veteran lawmaker urges decisive action

Rep. Zach Nunn of Iowa, a combat veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, told reporters on Monday that Republicans must address the issue now and see it through. He contrasted his stance with what he described as Democratic calls to “just give up” on the conflict.

Strategic balancing act

Barrett Marson, a Republican strategist based in Arizona, warned that only one person in Washington appears indifferent to gas prices, yet that individual heavily influences the nation’s direction. “For Republicans, it is a balancing act on the thinnest of wires to still support the president but also feel the pain that voters are going through,” Marson said.

Senator Justice calls the war a “mess”

Sen. Jim Justice of West Virginia, speaking in Washington, labeled the Iran conflict a “mess” and urged fellow Republicans to better address voter concerns about the economy. He emphasized the need to recognize the hardships faced by everyday families.

House leadership links war to price spikes

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a close ally of President Trump, acknowledged that the Iran conflict has contributed to higher gas prices, describing the situation as “drug on.” He expressed optimism that a new phase of the conflict could eventually bring gasoline and grocery costs down.

Trump’s stance and campaign financing

President Trump has downplayed concerns about rising fuel costs, stating he will “never apologize” for taking military action against Iran. Although he is not on the ballot, Trump has authorized the use of millions of dollars from his personal political action committee to aid vulnerable Republican candidates.

Polls show limited public support

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday found that only three in ten voters approve of Trump’s handling of the Iran situation. The low approval rating has given Democrats an opening to make the war a central theme of their campaign messaging.

Democratic criticism intensifies

During a rally in Atlanta, Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia attacked Trump, calling it “despicable” to mislead the nation into war and treat citizens as fools. Attack ads from groups such as VoteVets have begun targeting Republican senators, accusing them of contributing to $9‑per‑gallon gas prices in places like Dillingham, Alaska.

Republican outliers push for limits

Among House Republicans, Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania have voted to curb the president’s war powers, but they remain exceptions as most GOP members argue the conflict must be seen through.

Veteran Rep. Kiggans seeks quick resolution

Rep. Jen Kiggans of Virginia, speaking on a recent podcast, said she would like a “quick resolution” to the conflict but still supports the president’s objectives to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. She reaffirmed her backing of the military and the families of service members.

Party messaging on national security

The National Republican Congressional Committee framed the election as a choice between Republicans committed to disarming Iran and Democrats who have “bankrolled the regime” for a decade. A spokesperson highlighted the GOP record of keeping America safe, securing borders, lowering costs, cutting taxes, and restoring common sense.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee countered that Republicans are “blindly following Donald Trump’s ego,” arguing that the party would rather defend an endless war than stand up for constituents, a stance they claim will cost the GOP its majority.
