Denver Drivers Account for Most Traffic Fatalities, Not Kids on Scooters

With school back in session, conversations about safety often focus on children riding bikes, skateboards or scooters. While those discussions are important, recent data shows that the greatest danger on Denver’s streets comes from adult drivers.

Drivers responsible for most deaths

Since the start of 2026, 42 people have died in traffic crashes in the Denver area. Contrary to popular belief, the highest number of fatalities were not pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders or scooter riders. The majority of those killed were automobile drivers and passengers, followed by motorcyclists, walkers and cyclists.

When a child or adult is struck, social media commentary frequently blames the victim for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. One user wrote, “Maybe don’t walk into the middle of the street,” after a pedestrian was hit in April. Another added, “People always running around the streets, modern day natural selection I guess.” Such remarks overlook the role of the driver who failed to obey traffic laws.

What parents and drivers can do

Parents can certainly teach children to be vigilant, but the most effective way to protect kids is for drivers to follow the rules. Simple actions—slowing down, obeying stop signs, keeping phones out of reach, and avoiding the temptation to wave other vehicles through an intersection—can prevent tragedies.

Breaking stop‑sign protocol, even out of politeness, creates unpredictable patterns that can confuse other drivers and increase the risk of a collision. A driver who lets another vehicle proceed without stopping may unintentionally endanger a child who has the right of way.

Take responsibility on Denver’s streets

As the city debates where scooters and bikes may travel, it is worth remembering that the only factor most drivers can control is their own behavior. By adhering to traffic laws and staying focused behind the wheel, adults can make Denver’s streets safer for everyone, especially school‑age children.

Community leaders encourage residents to reflect on their driving habits this fall and to model safe practices for the next generation. The message is clear: protecting Denver’s youth starts with responsible driving.
