Republicans gear up for Dallas midterm convention to boost Trump agenda

Dallas will host the Republican Party’s first‑of‑its‑kind midterm convention on September 9‑10, a gathering party leaders say is essential for restoring momentum as voters grow frustrated with the economy and the ongoing Iran conflict. The two‑day event, slated for the American Airlines Center, is expected to draw roughly 30,000 attendees, exceeding the venue’s seating capacity, according to Republican donor Ray Washburne.

Why the convention matters locally and nationally

Republican National Committee spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre framed the convention as a chance to rally voters behind President Donald Trump’s agenda, highlighting efforts to lower drug prices, cut taxes and secure the southern border. Organizers plan to showcase Americans who have benefited from these policies while portraying the Democratic Party as increasingly driven by socialist ideas.

Strategists acknowledge the risk of centering the event on Trump, whose approval rating sits at 33 %. Nonetheless, many insiders believe the convention offers the best opportunity to energize the party’s base before Democrats intensify their push for control of both houses of Congress in the November 3 election.

Speaker lineup and candidate participation

While a full speaker list has not been released, Washburne indicated that most of Trump’s cabinet secretaries will attend, along with “pretty much everyone running in a hot race.” Vice President J.D. Vance is slated to speak on September 9, followed by President Trump on the second day. The presence of high‑profile figures is intended to give congressional candidates significant media exposure.

Only one campaign – Rep. Tom Barrett of Michigan – confirmed it will skip the convention to stay on the campaign trail. Several other candidates in competitive House and Senate races have not yet been notified of speaking opportunities, and some state party chairs have returned delegation seats because the timing conflicts with the start of the school year.

Fundraising and political calculations

The convention is also being positioned as a major fundraising hub. The RNC has launched a website selling official hats, T‑shirts and mugs, and Washburne said the event has already raised $42 million, which will fully fund the gathering.

Republican strategists remain divided on the convention’s impact. Dave Wilson, a South Carolina‑based strategist, expressed skepticism that a rally‑style event will shift voter sentiment in distant districts such as Cheyenne, Wyoming, or Charleston, South Carolina. Others, like Michigan RNC member Rob Steele, argue that Trump remains the party’s most effective spokesperson.

Implications for Texas races

Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, whose campaign has faced scandal, could benefit from the heightened attention the Dallas venue brings to the state. The convention’s timing and location may also influence local donors and volunteers who travel to support their preferred candidates.

As the midterm election approaches, the Dallas convention underscores the Republican Party’s strategy of using a high‑profile, rally‑like event to consolidate support for Trump’s policy priorities while navigating internal debates about the best path to electoral success.
