Republic High School adopts four‑quarterback rotation for 2026 season

Republic High School’s football program is taking a novel approach this fall. Head coach Ryan Cornelsen, who has guided the Tigers to a 45‑18 record, two district titles and a state championship appearance since 2019, announced a four‑quarterback rotation for the 2026 season. The committee will consist of his junior son Cooper Cornelsen, senior safety‑turned‑quarterback Trenten Coleman, senior multi‑sport athlete Brennen Overstreet, and senior all‑state safety and wide receiver Keiran Govan, who has committed to the University of Missouri.

Why a committee?

“It’s not about using just one quarterback,” Cornelsen said. “It’s about finding what works best for the package.” The coach emphasized that each player brings a distinct skill set that can be matched to specific offensive packages, keeping the offense fresh and adaptable.

Cooper Cornelsen, who grew up learning his father’s triple‑option scheme, will handle the traditional run‑pass option (RPO) plays. He has spent his first two high‑school seasons on Republic’s junior varsity squads, mastering the reads and timing required for the system.

Senior leaders in new roles

Trenten Coleman, a senior who primarily plays free safety, will see action in multiple offensive packages. Last season he recorded 40 tackles (33 solo) on defense and previously logged 242 rushing yards with five touchdowns and 77 passing yards with four touchdowns across his freshman and sophomore years. Coach Cornelsen plans to limit Coleman’s snaps at quarterback to preserve his defensive contributions.

Brennen Overstreet, another senior who also played in the defensive secondary, will take charge of the spread and I‑formation packages. Overstreet’s refined throwing ability earned him the quarterback duties, and he also excels as a varsity pitcher and third‑base player in the spring.

Keiran Govan, the most decorated of the four, is an all‑state safety and wide receiver who committed to Mizzou in April. Govan will line up behind center for direct snaps when the situation calls for a different look, adding another layer of versatility.

Team focus over individual stats

All four quarterbacks stressed that the ultimate goal is team success, not personal statistics. “We all have the same goal, we all want to win,” Cooper said. The committee model allows the Tigers to adjust on the fly, falling back on another quarterback if a particular package isn’t working.

The Tigers open the season on the road against Lebanon on Aug. 28. Fans can watch the new system in action via the Daily Citizen’s coverage and the team’s social media channels.

Community reaction

Local supporters have expressed optimism about the innovative approach. Many parents appreciate the emphasis on teamwork and the opportunity for multiple seniors to showcase leadership before graduation. The strategy aligns with the school’s broader commitment to developing well‑rounded student‑athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

Coach Cornelsen concluded, “All of them are good leaders, good kids, and unselfish. That’s the main thing—you have to be unselfish to make this work.” The four‑quarterback rotation promises to keep Republic’s offense dynamic and competitive as the Tigers aim to build on recent success in Class 5 football.
