Rep. Rick Crawford Secures Bipartisan Support for Sultana Memorial Coins in Arkansas

Marion, Arkansas – Actor and documentary producer Sean Astin is lending his voice to Rep. Rick Crawford’s effort to issue commemorative coins that honor the victims of the Sultana steamboat disaster of April 27, 1865. Astin, who narrated the film “Remember the Sultana,” said the coins provide a tangible reminder that “this happened” and help raise awareness for the tragedy.

Legislative proposal and funding plan

The proposal, introduced in 2024 as H.R. 7801, calls for the Treasury to mint $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins and half‑dollar coins in 2027. Each coin would carry a surcharge—$35 for the gold piece, $10 for the silver, and $5 for the half‑dollar—directed to the Sultana Historical Preservation Society. The legislation specifies that the Treasury must first recover the program’s costs, ensuring the coin program does not impose a net cost on the federal government.

Proceeds are intended to fund the Sultana Disaster Museum’s new location in Marion, supporting construction, exhibit development, artifact preservation, and an operating reserve. The museum estimates that nearly 1,200 people perished when the overloaded vessel sank near the Arkansas bank, making it the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history.

Bipartisan backing

The effort has attracted support from both sides of the aisle. In March 2024, Senator John Boozman (R‑AR) announced that Senators Boozman and Tom Cotton, along with Rep. Crawford, were joined by Rep. Steve Cohen (D‑TN) in backing the measure. Their joint statement highlighted the historical significance of the disaster and the need to preserve the memory of Union soldiers returning home from Confederate prison camps at Andersonville, Georgia, and Cahaba, Alabama.

Local impact and museum opening

The Sultana Disaster Museum, which will open its new facility at 114 Military Road on November 14, 2026, is temporarily closed while preparations are underway. Museum officials say the limited public recognition of the tragedy stems in part from its timing—Lincoln’s assassination and the closing days of the Civil War dominated national headlines in April 1865.

By directing coin‑sale surcharges to the museum, the legislation aims to provide a sustainable funding source for the institution, ensuring that future generations in Arkansas and beyond can learn about this pivotal yet overlooked chapter of American history.

Community response

Local residents have expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that the commemorative coins not only honor the fallen but also bring economic benefits to Marion through increased tourism and museum activity. Astin’s involvement has drawn additional media attention, reinforcing the project’s visibility on a national scale.

As the coin program moves toward a 2027 rollout, supporters remain confident that the bipartisan effort will secure the necessary authorization and funding, preserving the memory of the Sultana disaster while bolstering the cultural and economic vitality of Marion.
