The House Ethics Committee is investigating Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D‑Calif., over alleged sexual misconduct with a congressional aide. During the probe, a woman represented by attorneys who spoke to the committee disputed Gomez’s claim that the relationship was consensual.
Lawyers challenge Gomez’s account
“We represent one of the women who was interviewed by the House Committee on Ethics about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Representative Jimmy Gomez. Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client,” the lawyers said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital.
Gomez previously admitted to “mistakes outside [his] marriage” and said his actions were consensual and did not violate law or House Ethics rules. He added that, while his conduct did not break any rules, it nonetheless impacted those he cares about.
Committee expected to reach conclusion
The lawyers said they expect the Ethics Committee to reach the same conclusion as their client, calling the incident “just the latest example of brazen sexual misconduct by a member of Congress.” They urged Congress to act to hold members accountable and to provide a safe path for other survivors to come forward.
Fox News Digital reached out to Gomez’s office for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
Broader context
Gomez joins a growing list of House members under scrutiny for alleged improper relationships with staff. Former Rep. Eric Swalwell, D‑Calif., saw his gubernatorial campaign falter after rape allegations, while Reps. Tony Gonzales, R‑Tex., and Chuck Edwards, R‑N.C., withdrew their re‑election bids amid sexual‑harassment accusations.
