Step Inside the World’s Only Museum Dedicated to the American Tarot: Little Rock’s Esse Purse Museum — Wait, Try the Old State House Instead

There is a building standing on West Markham Street in downtown Little Rock that has quietly outlasted wars, reconstructions, economic booms, and every political storm the state of Arkansas has ever weathered. The Old State House Museum — Arkansas’s original statehouse, completed in 1836 — is not merely a handsome Greek Revival structure with a pretty white facade. It is, in the most literal sense, the room where Arkansas happened.

I walked through its front doors on a bright Tuesday morning, and within about thirty seconds I had completely forgotten I was supposed to be somewhere else by noon. That is what this place does to you. It pulls you in slowly, deliberately, the way a really good novel does — one detail at a time, each one more surprising than the last.

The museum is free to enter, which still strikes me as almost unreasonably generous given what is inside. The building itself is the first exhibit. Wander through the original legislative chambers and you are standing in the same room where Arkansas seceded from the Union in 1861 and, years later, voted to rejoin it. The old governor’s office feels startlingly intimate — a modest desk, afternoon light coming through tall windows — and you find yourself thinking about the people who sat there carrying decisions that affected hundreds of thousands of lives.

But the Old State House is far more than preserved furniture and dusty portraits. The permanent exhibits here are genuinely well-crafted storytelling. The Arkansas Made gallery showcases the ingenuity of Arkansans across centuries of industry and craft, and the Voices from the Past exhibit brings forward the experiences of people — including enslaved Arkansans — whose stories were long left out of the official record. The museum does not flinch from complexity, and that intellectual honesty is exactly what makes it so compelling.

There is also a long hall lined with inaugural gowns worn by Arkansas’s first ladies, which sounds like it might be a minor footnote but turns out to be a genuinely fascinating window into social history — the fabrics, the silhouettes, the ambitions stitched into each dress tell their own quiet story about changing eras.

The location is ideal for a walkable downtown morning. The museum sits just a few blocks from the Arkansas River, close to restaurants and coffee shops in the River Market District. Plan to spend at least ninety minutes here, more if you are the type who reads every placard — and at this museum, you will want to read every placard.

What the Old State House offers that very few places can match is a sense of genuine consequence. History did not just pass through this building; it was made here, argued over here, wept over here. Spend a morning inside and Little Rock will feel like an entirely different city when you step back out into the sunlight.
