Trump Endorses Ryan Elijah After Cory Mills Loses Florida GOP Primary

In a development that will shape the upcoming November race for Florida’s 7th Congressional District, former news anchor Ryan Elijah emerged as the Republican nominee after incumbent Congressman Cory Mills was defeated in the GOP primary by a 13% margin.

The primary, held on August 18, covered all of Seminole County and the southern portion of Volusia County. Elijah’s victory positions him to face Democrat Bale Dalton in the general election, a contest that could affect the balance of power in the U.S. House.

Trump’s endorsement follows primary upset

Former President Donald Trump, who had publicly backed Mills earlier in the year, posted on his Truth Social account on Wednesday morning, stating, “I told Congressman Cory Mills of Florida, a friend of mine, to get out of the race, but he wouldn’t listen. He thought he could win, so who can blame him?” Trump did not formally withdraw his support before the primary, but his post after the results signaled a clear shift.

Trump then praised Elijah, writing, “We now have a great candidate, Ryan Elijah, running in his (Mills’) place! Ryan stands for EVERYTHING MAGA, and is respected by ALL. He has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” The former president’s endorsement underscores his continued influence in Florida’s Republican politics.

Elijah’s reaction to the endorsement

Elijah expressed humility and gratitude, noting, “We knew a congratulations was coming. I think anytime the President of the United States endorses your campaign, I mean, it’s humbling. That’s the best way to describe it.” He added that the endorsement was not a surprise, saying, “We didn’t really know it was coming, but we knew a congratulations was coming.”

When asked about the primary outcome, Elijah said, “I think it’s ultimately the right thing that the voters in both counties, Volusia and Seminole, made that choice to say we want someone else. I mean, ultimately it’s their representative.”

Background on the incumbent

Cory Mills, who will complete his second term, remains under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged campaign‑finance violations and accusations of sexual misconduct or dating violence. Mills has denied any wrongdoing.

The primary loss marks a significant shift for the district, which has been represented by Mills since 2022. Elijah’s campaign emphasizes a strong alignment with former President Trump’s agenda, positioning himself as a staunch defender of the “Make America Great Again” principles.

Implications for the November race

With every congressional seat critical for determining control of the House, Elijah’s nomination adds another competitive race to the 2026 midterm calendar. Democrats will look to capitalize on any lingering controversy surrounding Mills, while Republicans aim to consolidate support behind Elijah’s Trump‑backed platform.

Local voters in Seminole and southern Volusia counties will now evaluate how Elijah’s positions align with community priorities, including economic development, public safety, and education. The upcoming campaign will likely feature town‑hall meetings, local media appearances, and continued social‑media outreach.

Both campaigns are expected to intensify their outreach in the weeks leading up to the November election, with particular focus on voter turnout in traditionally swing precincts within the district.
