Advance Redding, the nonprofit organization that has managed the Civic Auditorium for over 14 years, announced it will no longer oversee its operations. This decision comes as the city of Redding prepares to take over management responsibilities.
The announcement followed a Redding City Council meeting where members decided against providing up to $400,000 in transition funding to Advance Redding. Instead, the council unanimously voted to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to find another nonprofit or for-profit entity interested in managing the Civic.
Advance Redding was initially formed with the help of Bethel Church leaders to keep the Civic Auditorium operational when the city faced challenges in managing it. Bethel Church was a significant user of the facility, renting space for its students for several years. However, after Bethel ceased renting space in late 2023, Advance Redding faced financial difficulties compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and a fluctuating ticket industry.
Despite receiving substantial financial support from the city in the past year, Advance Redding and city officials concluded that continued operation without further financial aid was unsustainable. Council members expressed their gratitude for Advance Redding’s efforts, with council member Jack Munns noting the difficulty of the decision to halt funding.
Mayor Mike Littau emphasized the Civic’s importance to the community, describing it as more than just a building but a place for community gatherings and events. He assured residents that the Civic will remain open during the search for new management, with the city stepping in to oversee community events such as the Redding 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament and Ironman-related activities.
However, skepticism remains about the feasibility of finding a new operator. Redding Chamber of Commerce CEO Todd Jones expressed doubts about the interest and capability of any private or nonprofit entity to manage the Civic, especially given the need for costly infrastructural repairs.
