Controversial Costumes at Redding’s Lone Stranger Event Stir Community Reaction

The annual Lone Stranger event, part of Redding’s beloved rodeo week organized by the Asphalt Cowboys, has sparked controversy this year due to costumes worn by participants. The event, known for its community scavenger hunt and mock bank robbery, featured Redding Police Chief Brian Barner and local restaurant owner Karline Niver in costumes that some residents found offensive.

Barner’s costume included an afro wig and a liquor bottle prop, while Niver wore a mask depicting a brown-skinned man with a black mustache. These choices have led to accusations of racial insensitivity from some community members. A viral Reddit thread highlighted the issue, with many calling the costumes racist.

Community Reactions

Margaret Ramirez, a concerned resident, expressed her disappointment after seeing the images online. She reached out to Chief Barner via email, but as of May 21, had not received a response. Ramirez stated, “I felt angry that it was OK to dress up as stereotypes. This is 2026, and photos like this may seem harmless but they just allow creeping racism to show its ugly face.”

In response, Barner described the reactions as “unfortunate,” explaining that the costumes were intended to obscure identities, a tradition in the event’s history. Niver, who selected her costume from a tote provided by the Asphalt Cowboys, expressed regret, stating she did not perceive the racial implications until afterward. She has since approached the organization about updating costume options.

Calls for Change

The Shasta Equal Justice Coalition weighed in, emphasizing the need for acknowledgment and repair of any harm caused. They noted the historical context of racial stereotyping in costumes, drawing parallels to the minstrel shows of the past, which perpetuated harmful racial biases.

Despite the backlash, the Lone Stranger event remains a cherished tradition in Redding, aiming to bring the community together. However, this incident has prompted discussions on how to preserve local customs while ensuring they align with contemporary values of inclusivity and respect.
