The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage, with supply falling nearly 25% in June. The organization is urging North Texans to donate blood, particularly platelets and types O positive and B negative blood.
Local Connection
Alexis Gonzalez, who works with the Red Cross North Texas Region, knows firsthand the importance of blood donation. Gonzalez has been a blood donor and advocate since 2023 and has been educating her community about the need for blood donations, especially among the Hispanic/Latino population.
In 2025, Gonzalez found herself on the other side of blood donation when she was hospitalized with three blood clots in her liver and severe anemia. Her experience as a blood donor helped her confidently inform hospital staff of her blood type, which was crucial in her treatment.
The Red Cross has mobile blood drives throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, as well as fixed donation centers in Irving and Plano. Donors who give between July 13-31 will receive a Fandango movie ticket by email.
