Oswadeliz Núñez’s son Daniel was deported from the United States to Venezuela, where he died in a devastating earthquake the next day. Daniel had been living in the US and was in the process of seeking asylum when he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Deportation and Death
According to his mother, Daniel had decided to return to Venezuela after facing intense persecution as an illegal immigrant in the US. However, before he could make the journey on his own, ICE agents detained him and put him on a deportation flight. The flight arrived in Venezuela on the day of the earthquake, and Daniel was among those who died in the disaster.
Núñez has spoken out about the treatment her son received while in ICE custody, saying that he was subjected to psychological pressure to sign his deportation papers. She is now seeking justice for her son’s death and calling for greater transparency and accountability from the Venezuelan government and the US Department of Homeland Security.
Seeking Justice
Núñez, a lawyer herself, plans to continue speaking out on social media and to pursue further legal education so that she can advocate for her son’s case and others like it. She is calling for safer, more efficient, and humane protocols for illegal immigrants who are deported back to their home countries.
