Rat Shack Brings Joy to Federal Hill

Meg Murray, a resident of Federal Hill, has created a public art installation called Rat Shack, which is made out of a medicine cabinet and features adorable tiny rats made from needle-felting. The installation is located at the corner of William and Ostend streets and has become a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

A Labor of Love

Murray started creating the rats as a way to avoid doomscrolling on her phone and soon found herself with more rats than she knew what to do with. She decided to share them with her community by creating the Rat Shack installation. The rats are made with small parts, so Murray cautions that they are not suitable for young children.

Murray is a senior content strategist at Fearless, a local tech company, and also volunteers as the board president for Federal Hill Main Street. She hopes that the Rat Shack will bring people out of their houses and into the neighborhood, encouraging them to explore local businesses and connect with their community.

A Community Effort

The Rat Shack has become a beloved part of the Federal Hill community, with many residents and visitors stopping by to admire the installation and take a rat home. Murray hopes that the project will inspire others to create their own public art installations and bring joy to their communities.

Murray has announced that she will be creating new rats and will announce their availability on the Rat Shack’s Instagram account. She encourages people to visit the installation, take a walk around the neighborhood, and support local businesses.
