Pueblo Police Officer Fatally Shoots Abduction Suspect After He Releases Infant

On Saturday evening just before 8:00 p.m., Pueblo Police Department officers were dispatched to a domestic‑violence incident involving a weapon at a residence on West 10th Street. The callers reported that a male suspect was armed with a handgun, threatening the woman inside and warning that anyone who approached would be shot.

Protective Order and Perimeter Established

When additional units arrived, they learned an active restraining order was in place to protect the woman and her infant child from the suspect. Officers quickly established a perimeter around the block to contain the situation and to safeguard the family.

Suspect Attempts to Flee with Infant

Shortly after the perimeter was set, the suspect exited the home carrying the infant. He ran toward the intersection of West 10th Street and Grand Avenue, stopped in a nearby parking lot, and began rummaging through a backpack he had brought with him.

Police repeatedly ordered the man to stop digging and to place the infant down. The suspect complied with the first command, placing the child in a stroller, but then resumed searching the backpack. At that point, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.

Medical Aid and Investigation

Officers immediately checked on the infant, who was unharmed, and rendered medical aid to the wounded suspect. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The woman remained physically safe throughout the incident.

The 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation of the officer‑involved shooting. All officers who were present are currently on administrative leave while the inquiry proceeds, in accordance with department policy.

Community Impact

This tragic event underscores the challenges law‑enforcement faces when responding to volatile domestic‑violence situations, especially those involving children. Pueblo officials have reiterated their commitment to protecting families and enforcing restraining orders while also ensuring that any use of force is thoroughly examined.

Residents are encouraged to report any threats of violence and to seek assistance from local resources such as the Pueblo Domestic Violence Hotline. The department will provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
