Prosecutors say engraved bullet shows Charlie Kirk was targeted for his politics

Salt Lake City — In the murder case of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, Utah prosecutors have highlighted an engraved bullet as evidence of political targeting. The bullet, recovered from the suspected murder weapon, bears the inscription “Hey Fascist! CATCH!” which prosecutors say demonstrates the defendant’s intent to kill Kirk because of his political views.

The defendant, 23‑year‑old Tyler Robinson, turned himself in a day after the September 10 shooting at Utah Valley University. He faces charges that include aggravated murder and has not yet entered a plea. Prosecutors contend that the political motive could be an aggravating factor that makes Robinson eligible for the death penalty, while his attorneys argue the evidence is insufficient to prove such intent.

Legal filings focus on political motive

Both sides have filed documents outlining whether the crime includes aggravating circumstances. The prosecution’s latest filing asserts that the engraved bullet is an “overt political reference.” They also cite a text message Robinson allegedly sent, writing, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” Defense counsel says the message does not rise to the level of proof needed to establish a political motive.

Robinson’s attorneys point to a handwritten note allegedly left for his roommate, Lance Twiggs, that reads, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it.” Twiggs told investigators he had never heard Robinson discuss Kirk before the shooting and that Robinson’s conversations about politics were occasional, often mentioning former President Donald Trump.

Background on Kirk and alleged motive

Charlie Kirk, co‑founder of Turning Point USA, was a prominent voice in mobilizing conservative youth and supported former President Donald Trump’s re‑election. Prosecutors note Kirk’s public opposition to same‑sex marriage and pediatric gender treatments, contrasting with Robinson’s reported personal circumstances, including a romantic relationship with Twiggs, who was considering a gender transition at the time.

During a July preliminary hearing, investigators presented DNA analysis linking Robinson to the suspected weapon and to a tool used to engrave the bullet. The defense has repeatedly questioned the reliability of the DNA evidence.

Next steps in the case

Judge Tony Graf will decide whether the case proceeds to trial after a further hearing scheduled for September 1. The determination of political targeting as an aggravating factor will influence whether prosecutors pursue the death penalty.

The case underscores the intersection of violent crime, political expression, and the legal standards governing capital punishment in Utah.
