Cleveland Cavaliers acquire Peyton Watson in four‑team trade, send Max Strus to Clippers

In a multi‑team deal that reshapes the roster of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the franchise secured 23‑year‑old wing Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets. Watson, a restricted free agent who spent his first four NBA seasons with Denver, is expected to sign a four‑year contract worth $88 million, which includes a player option and a trade kicker.

Trade details and draft assets

The trade, confirmed by an anonymous source familiar with the negotiations, also moves veteran forward Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers. In return, Cleveland will send an unprotected 2031 first‑round pick and a 2032 second‑round selection—originally acquired from the Sacramento Kings—to Denver. The Nuggets will also receive guard Julian Reese from Washington.

Additionally, the Cavaliers will acquire a 2027 second‑round pick from the Clippers, which will be forwarded to the Washington Wizards as part of the broader agreement.

What Watson brings to Cleveland

Watson appeared in a career‑high 40 games last season, posting personal bests of 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. His versatility on the wing addresses a need the Cavs identified after LeBron James chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers rather than return to Cleveland for a third stint. The team had also been evaluating free agents such as DeMar DeRozan and Jonathan Kuminga, but Watson’s contract situation and fit with the roster made him a priority.

Impact on the roster and recent moves

Max Strus, who missed the first 67 games of last season due to a broken left foot, contributed key baskets and defensive plays during the Cavaliers’ run to the Eastern Conference finals, a milestone the franchise had not reached since 2018. The Cavs were swept by the New York Knicks in that series.

Earlier in the week, Cleveland cleared additional salary‑cap space by trading guard Dennis Schröder to the Charlotte Hornets for forward Tre Mann. Mann’s tenure in Cleveland will be brief, as he is slated to join the Washington Wizards in a separate transaction involving Cam Whitmore.

Looking ahead

With Watson’s addition, the Cavaliers aim to solidify their wing depth and maintain competitiveness in the Eastern Conference. The trade also underscores Cleveland’s broader strategy of leveraging draft assets and cap flexibility to build a roster capable of supporting a championship‑contending core.
