Close to home. Always in the loop.

Forget the Tourist Trail — Bendigo State Park’s Little Sister Is Waiting for You

There is a moment, usually somewhere around the second mile of a walk through Minard Run Oil Company lands just outside Bradford, when the trees close in just enough and the creek noise rises just enough, and you realize you have completely forgotten what day it is. That moment is exactly why people keep coming back to Serenity Hills Golf Course & Recreation Area — and exactly why I keep telling everyone who visits McKean County to put it near the top of their list.

Tucked along the southern edge of Bradford, Serenity Hills sits in a natural bowl of forested hillsides that feel genuinely removed from the busy Route 219 corridor just a few minutes away. The entrance road itself sets the tone: a narrow lane shaded by second-growth hardwoods that opens, almost theatrically, onto a well-kept nine-hole layout that rolls and dips with the natural contour of the land. This is not a manicured resort course designed to impress architects. It is something better — a course that feels as though the land simply decided, on its own, to become a golf course, and nobody argued.

The golf here is approachable in the best possible sense. Locals bring their teenagers for a first round. Visiting fly fishermen who drove up from Pittsburgh squeeze in nine holes before dinner. Couples walk the course together at a leisurely pace that no ranger is going to hurry along. Greens fees are reasonable by any standard, which matters when you are trying to talk four friends into a spontaneous afternoon out. Club rentals are available on site, so there is genuinely no excuse not to play.

But Serenity Hills is not only a golf story. The surrounding grounds invite you to slow down in other ways too. Picnic areas are scattered where the shade is deepest, and on a warm July afternoon the place fills with families who have nothing more complicated planned than sandwiches and cold drinks and the particular pleasure of watching children run around somewhere that is not a parking lot. The small pond at the lower edge of the property draws anglers and casual wanderers in equal measure.

Fall may be the single best season to visit. When the hillsides turn — and in McKean County they turn hard, in saturated reds and oranges that belong on a calendar cover — Serenity Hills becomes one of those places that makes you feel briefly and profoundly lucky to be here. The golf is secondary. The color is the whole point.

Bradford does not always make the outdoor recreation lists that Kinzua and the National Forest dominate, which means places like Serenity Hills remain refreshingly un-crowded. Go on a weekday and you may have the back nine almost entirely to yourself. That kind of quiet is increasingly rare, and it is worth driving for.

Bring sunscreen, bring a light jacket for the shaded stretches, and bring more time than you think you need. Serenity Hills has a way of stretching the afternoon in the most welcome direction possible.
