Producer of ‘Reagan’ film claims YouTube blocked ads for interview series

Producer Mark Joseph, who helped bring the 2024 biopic Reagan to theaters, says the film’s promotional podcast series, “Making REAGAN,” has run into repeated ad restrictions on YouTube. The platform labeled ads for several episodes as “election advertising” and “shocking content,” even when the conversations were ordinary interviews with participants such as rock legend Gene Simmons, TV host Kathie Lee Gifford, and author Arthur Laffer.

Joseph told Fox News Digital that an ad for the first episode, featuring Simmons discussing family, his producing work and his love of America, was blocked for the two reasons despite the interview’s tame tone. Similar blocks occurred for episodes with Amanda Righetti, Lesley‑Anne Down, Dan Lauria, Tanya Tucker and others. An interview with John Hinckley Jr., the man who attempted to assassinate President Reagan in 1981, was also flagged as election advertising.

YouTube’s response

YouTube said the ads were removed because they contained profanity, not because they violated its U.S. Election Ads policy. After review, the company confirmed the ads did not breach election‑advertising rules but still could not run due to the profanity. The platform noted that the creator’s organic videos remain compliant with community guidelines and offered to help the producer adjust content for future promotion.

Impact on the film’s re‑release

Joseph is urging YouTube to reverse the decisions ahead of the director’s cut debut in roughly 600 theaters on September 25. The extended version adds ten minutes of footage and follows the original release, which faced earlier obstacles when Facebook’s automated systems mistakenly flagged promotional posts as political content.

Other filmmakers have reported similar challenges. Ash Greyson, CEO of Ribbow Media Group, said faith‑based movies such as Jesus Revolution and God’s Not Dead have encountered frequent YouTube flags, whereas secular projects see far fewer issues.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between content creators and major digital platforms over what qualifies as election‑related or inappropriate material, especially for projects that celebrate a historically conservative figure.
