Colorado teacher fears retaliation after district questions genetics shirt

Colorado educators and parents are watching a dispute unfold in a local school district after award‑winning teacher Stacey Adair was summoned for wearing a shirt that read “XX ≠ XY.” The shirt, which Adair says simply states a genetic fact, was worn to a professional‑development training session earlier this month.

District response

Following an anonymous complaint, district officials gave Adair a questionnaire asking why she chose the shirt and instructed her not to wear apparel with “controversial messaging” in the future. The district’s policy bars clothing that is political or disruptive to the educational environment, even though no students were present at the training.

Adair, who was named Teacher of the Year at the 2025 Teacher Freedom Summit, told reporters she did not view the shirt as political. “I just wear these shirts because they’re facts. Someone has to be stating the truth,” she said.

Union backdrop

Adair’s concerns extend beyond the shirt. In 2021 she helped unseat two school‑board members who were backed by the local teachers union, leading the board to let its contract with the union lapse. She says the former contract gave the union significant control over district decisions, such as approving merit‑based pay increases.

Since that effort, Adair says she has felt targeted. She recounted receiving a veiled threatening email from a local plumber after speaking out against the union, and district security required her to file a police report.

Broader implications

Ryan Walters, chief executive of the Teachers Freedom Alliance, a group that promotes alternatives to traditional teacher unions, said Adair’s case is not isolated. “These are the types of teachers that, when you talk to parents around the country, they say, ‘I want my kids in a teacher’s class like that,’ and yet you see the way they’re treated by the districts,” Walters said.

Walters argues that incidents like this illustrate a larger ideological struggle in schools, where a lack of diverse viewpoints can lead to an environment that suppresses factual discussion. He noted that similar complaints have arisen in both red and blue states, suggesting a national pattern.

Parental‑rights perspective

Many parents in the district have expressed support for Adair, saying they want teachers who can present accurate information without fear of retribution. The situation raises questions about parental rights to have their children taught by educators who are free to share factual content, even when that content touches on biology or genetics.

While the district maintains its policy is intended to keep the learning environment focused, critics argue that applying it to a shirt worn at an adult‑only training session may overreach.

Next steps

Adair says she expects further scrutiny and is considering legal counsel to protect her employment rights. The district has not indicated whether any disciplinary action will follow the questionnaire.

The episode adds to ongoing debates across Colorado about the role of teachers unions, the limits of district policies, and how schools balance factual instruction with concerns about perceived political messaging.
