Princeton Hospital’s Healing Garden Restored by Smitherman Legacy

The Princeton Healing Garden in Birmingham’s West End has been restored and rededicated, thanks to the efforts of the Smitherman family. Carole Smitherman, a retired municipal judge and the first Black woman to serve as mayor, was visibly moved during the ceremony, where her daughter, Crystal Smitherman, now holds her former District 6 City Council seat.

The garden, originally established by Carole during her time on the Birmingham City Council, had fallen into disrepair over the years. It holds personal significance for the Smitherman family, as Carole and her husband, Sen. Rodger Smitherman, experienced the loss of their first child at the nearby Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Carole found solace in the garden, which is located across from the hospital campus.

Crystal Smitherman, who has followed in her mother’s footsteps, emphasized the importance of preserving her mother’s legacy. With the help of LaQuita Wilson, her chief of staff, and funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, Crystal worked with Princeton Baptist Medical Center’s president, Daniel Listi, and architect Rob Garrard to restore the garden.

The renovation aimed to create a welcoming space for the community and residents of Princeton Towers. Raised beds were added for planting vegetables and flowers, providing a place for meditation and gathering. The garden is maintained as a safe space by the hospital, with controlled access during daytime hours to ensure it remains a peaceful environment.

The rededication of the garden symbolizes a bridge between past, present, and future, honoring the Smitherman family’s commitment to their community and the healing power of nature.
