Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress” to be auctioned after global exhibition

Sotheby’s announced that Princess Diana’s famed 1994 black evening gown – popularly known as the “revenge dress” – will travel to four major cities before its auction. The gown, designed by Greek couturier Christina Stambolian, will be displayed in London from Sept. 18‑24, then move to Hong Kong (Oct. 1‑15), Geneva (Nov. 6‑11) and New York (Dec. 2‑9). The auction is scheduled for Dec. 9, with estimates ranging up to $300,000.

Why the dress matters

On June 29, 1994, Diana wore the sleek, shoulder‑exposing silk dress to a party at London’s Serpentine Gallery, the same night her husband, now‑King Charles III, publicly admitted infidelity in an ITN documentary. The bold choice broke royal protocol – black had traditionally been reserved for mourning – and turned the gown into a powerful statement of confidence and self‑possession.

“Fashion can be a language when words fail,” said Morgane Halimi, head of handbags and fashion at Sotheby’s. “On her own terms, Princess Diana turned the dress into one of the most powerful messages she ever made.”

Historical context and previous sales

The dress was first offered for charity in 1997 when Diana auctioned 79 of her garments to support breast‑cancer and AIDS causes. Since then, several of her pieces have fetched record prices, including a sweater that sold for more than $1.1 million in 2023.

According to Sotheby’s, the dress was stored for three years before Diana decided to wear it, fearing it might be “too daring.” The accompanying jeweled choker incorporates an antique diamond‑and‑sapphire brooch gifted by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, for Diana’s wedding.

Charitable component

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to NHS Lothian Charity, supporting health‑service initiatives in Scotland. A rare copy of the original 1997 auction catalogue – signed by the late princess and the designer – will accompany the gown.

The dress’s cultural impact endures, inspiring fashion lines, social‑media tributes and television portrayals such as Netflix’s “The Crown.” As Halimi noted, the moment “gave license to anyone, especially women, to use fashion beyond adornment – as a shield, a weapon, or both.”
