The Pawleys Island Chapel — a tiny, white-painted Episcopal chapel tucked back among the maritime oaks on the island’s northern end — belongs firmly in that last category. It seats no more than a few dozen people comfortably, and the interior is as spare and honest as the building’s white clapboard exterior suggests. Wooden pews, plain glass windows framing live oaks draped in Spanish moss, a small altar, and a simple wooden cross — nothing more. And yet the effect is genuinely moving. The Lowcountry light that filters through those windows in the morning has a quality that no stained glass could improve upon.
The chapel holds Sunday services during the summer season, typically from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and attending one is an experience that has very little to do with denomination and everything to do with place. Families who have been coming to Pawleys Island for generations sometimes count chapel attendance as one of the fixed rituals of their summer, the same way they count crabbing off the dock or eating at a particular spot on the strand. There is something reassuring about that kind of continuity, and you feel it standing in the room.
Even if a Sunday service doesn’t fit your schedule, the chapel grounds are worth a quiet visit on their own terms. The small churchyard around the building has a handful of old markers, and the surrounding canopy of trees creates a natural stillness that’s hard to find in a place this close to the beach. Stand here for ten minutes and you’ll understand immediately why people have been returning to Pawleys Island for generations — it has always traded in exactly this kind of uncomplicated beauty.
Pawleys Island itself is just a short drive south of Georgetown along Highway 17, and the chapel sits near the northern tip of the island along Myrtle Avenue. Parking is limited and the lane is narrow, so plan accordingly and approach slowly. The chapel asks nothing of you beyond a little reverence for what’s around you, and it gives back something that’s difficult to name but easy to feel. In a region that’s full of history and natural wonder, this small white building at the edge of the marsh has a way of rising to the top of the memory once you’ve been there. Don’t skip it.
