Bend Fire & Rescue rolled out a new online tool on Thursday to simplify requests for free wildfire risk home assessments and tailored mitigation recommendations. The system, built on the Fire Aside platform, lets property owners schedule appointments and manage assessment data online.

Own Your Zone program expands services

The tool is part of the department’s Own Your Zone program, which helps homeowners and neighborhoods prepare for wildfires. Bend Fire & Rescue serves more than 144,000 residents in the city and the Deschutes Rural Fire Protection District, providing emergency medical services, fire protection, and community risk‑reduction programs.

Assessments involve a one‑hour walkthrough with a trained assessor who inspects the property alongside the resident. The assessor points out vulnerabilities and offers guidance on creating defensible space and hardening homes against fire.

Deputy fire marshal emphasizes safety

Melissa Steele, deputy fire marshal for Bend Fire & Rescue, said the new tool is a key step in helping residents take action to lower wildfire risk. “These assessments provide practical recommendations that can help homeowners improve their property’s resilience to wildfire while supporting Bend Fire’s community wildfire preparedness efforts,” Steele said.

After the walkthrough, residents can create a secure Fire Aside profile to view their assessment report, access preparedness materials, and upload photos of completed mitigation work to track progress.

Data will guide future outreach

The information gathered will help fire officials identify common preparedness needs across the area, informing future education, outreach, and resource planning. Residents can request a free assessment at bendoregon.gov/own-your-zone, after which department staff will follow up to schedule an appointment.
