Prince Harry and six high‑profile figures to learn initial payment in Daily Mail privacy case

London – On Friday, Prince Harry and six other claimants, including singer‑songwriter Elton John, will receive a written notice detailing the initial amount they must pay Associated Newspapers Ltd., the publisher of the Daily Mail, following their defeat in a High Court privacy case.

Legal background

The claimants argued that the tabloid engaged in unlawful tactics such as phone hacking and the use of private investigators to obtain material about their private lives. After an 11‑week trial that concluded on July 7, Justice Matthew Nicklin found the evidence insufficient to support the allegations and suggested that some of the reporting may have come from legitimate sources.

Potential financial exposure

Associated Newspapers has sought more than £9.9 million as an interim payment. The claimants’ lawyers contend that the interim amount should be just over £7.9 million. The court’s written decision, expected at 2 p.m. on Friday, will also address the total liability, which could rise to as much as £10 million.

Who is involved

In addition to Prince Harry and Elton John, the case includes Doreen Lawrence – an anti‑racism activist whose son Stephen was murdered in 1993 – John’s husband David Furnish, actors Sadie Frost and Liz Hurley, and former MP Simon Hughes.

Broader context

The ruling follows a series of successful lawsuits by Prince Harry against British tabloids. In 2023, he secured a judgment against the Daily Mirror for “widespread and habitual” phone hacking. Last year, The Sun issued an unprecedented apology and agreed to a substantial settlement for past invasions of his privacy.

Prince Harry has repeatedly said that his legal battles, which broke with royal tradition by seeking redress in the courts, contributed to his strained relationship with his father, King Charles III, and his brother, Prince William. He also blames the press for the 1997 death of his mother, Princess Diana, and for sustained attacks on his wife, Meghan Markle, which led the couple to relocate to the United States in 2020.

Future plans

Two days after the court’s financial decision was announced, it became public that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will return to the United Kingdom later this month, planning to reside in a non‑royal home outside London.
