Hernando County Jury Convicts Jeffrey Crum in 1993 Murder of 12-Year-Old Jennifer Odom

Brooksville, Fla. – After more than 30 years of searching, a Hernando County jury delivered a guilty verdict for Jeffrey Norman Crum, 64, on charges of kidnapping, sexual battery and murder in the 1993 killing of 12‑year‑old Jennifer Renee Odom.

Verdict and Prosecutorial Intent

The Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office announced that prosecutors will seek the death penalty. State Attorney Bill Gladson said the community of Pasco and Hernando counties had waited for answers for decades and that the verdict brings closure to the Odom family.

Background of the 1993 Disappearance

On February 19, 1993, Jennifer Odom got off her school bus in a rural part of Pasco County and began walking home. When she failed to return, volunteers and law‑enforcement officers launched a search that spanned roughly 60 square miles across Pasco and Hernando counties.

Witnesses reported seeing a faded blue pickup truck following her, and one witness testified that she entered the vehicle. Six days later, on February 25, searchers discovered her body in an abandoned orange grove in Hernando County. Her missing book bag and clarinet case were recovered nearly two years later, in January 1995, from another rural area of the county.

Investigation Over Three Decades

Detectives pursued hundreds of leads and applied newer forensic technologies as they became available. The case was eventually linked to a January 1992 assault on another teenage girl in Pasco County, a crime for which Crum had already been convicted and was serving two life sentences for sexual battery.

A 2015 familial DNA search related to the 1992 assault pointed investigators toward a member of Crum’s family, narrowing the focus to Crum himself. Additional evidence included his prior ownership of a blue pickup truck matching the description given by witnesses and his familiarity with the areas where Jennifer disappeared and where her body was found.

Trial Highlights

Assistant State Attorneys Richard Buxman and Donald McCathran presented forensic findings, details of the body’s discovery, and the similarities between the 1992 assault and the 1993 murder. The jury deliberated and returned a unanimous guilty verdict.

Gladson praised the perseverance of investigators, forensic professionals, prosecutors and community members who refused to let the case fade from memory. He emphasized the debt owed to Jennifer’s family, who endured “unimaginable loss” while waiting for justice.

Multi‑Agency Collaboration

The investigation was a joint effort involving the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Biology Division, and the State Attorney’s Office of Bruce Bartlett.

The conviction marks the conclusion of one of the longest‑running cold cases in the region and underscores the impact of modern DNA techniques combined with persistent community involvement.
