Changes to the Triple Crown
The change in date is intended to preserve the tradition of horses running back in the Preakness and to enhance participation in the Triple Crown races, according to Maryland Jockey Club President and General Manager Bill Knauf. Often, Kentucky Derby winners skip the Preakness to give their horses more time to rest.
The future of the Triple Crown was recently called into question when Churchill Downs announced a new 6-race championship series that starts with the Kentucky Derby but does not include the Preakness. However, Maryland’s governor remains confident that the Preakness will continue to thrive.
