A tragic accident occurred in Port St. Lucie when a 78-year-old woman was knocked down by a sports utility vehicle in a residential driveway. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident happened on the 100 block of Southeast El Sito Court.
The woman was standing outside the 2016 Lincoln MKX SUV between the open driver’s door and the left side of the vehicle. Her 59-year-old son, who was seated in the right front seat, started the engine by reaching over the center console to depress the brake pedal and used his right hand to push the start button.
For an unknown reason, the vehicle began to roll backwards in the driveway, knocking the woman to the ground. She was transported to HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where she was pronounced dead at 11:19 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and the Port St. Lucie Police Department and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office have been contacted for additional information.
