Ponte Your Moños Brings Cultural Pride to Chicago with Braiding Event

The vibrant cultural movement, Ponte Your Moños, is making its way to Chicago this weekend, offering a unique blend of cultural pride and community support through a braiding event. This initiative, which began as a response to federal immigration policies, uses the art of braiding to celebrate Latino heritage and raise funds for local causes.

A Celebration of Heritage

Founded by Dulce Castillo and Angie Portillo, Ponte Your Moños emerged in Los Angeles during a time of heightened immigration enforcement. The movement has since spread to cities like Chicago, where it continues to resonate with the Latino community. The event will take place at Vault Gallerie in Pilsen, where participants can have their hair braided with colorful ribbons and lace, symbolizing cultural resistance and pride.

Funds raised from the event will benefit the Big Sis Club, a girls’ empowerment program in Chicago. The initiative is volunteer-led, with local hairstylists and community members coming together to support the cause. Sophia Silva, a Chicago Latina leader, played a pivotal role in bringing the event to the city, inspired by her experience with the movement in Los Angeles.

Community and Cultural Connection

The braiding event coincides with the Sueños Music Festival, providing attendees with an opportunity to showcase their braids as a statement of cultural identity. Castillo, who is visiting Chicago for the first time, emphasizes the importance of using her platform to raise awareness and support immigrant communities.

The movement’s roots are deeply tied to the Chicano movement, where fashion served as a form of political resistance. By incorporating elements of Mexican and Latin American braiding traditions, Ponte Your Moños fosters a sense of community and cultural pride among participants.

As the event unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity within the Latino community, offering a platform for expression and empowerment. With more than 12 local volunteers and an anticipated turnout of 100 to 200 participants, the event is set to be a vibrant celebration of heritage and community spirit.
