Police and fire officials investigate death at Hammocks neighborhood, school locked down

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Sheriff’s Office launched a death investigation Thursday morning in the Hammocks neighborhood, near the intersection of 157th Avenue and Southwest 140th Street. The incident began as a medical call that included reports of an assault, prompting a swift response from emergency personnel.

Scene and police activity

First‑on‑scene firefighters set up a large white tent where a body, covered by a yellow tarp, was later observed under the shelter. Aerial footage from a police helicopter, identified as Chopper 6, captured deputies working under the tent and collecting what appeared to be a firearm placed in a box.

Police tape cordoned off the area, keeping nearby residents and drivers at a safe distance while investigators processed the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been assigned to lead the investigation, though officials have not released details about the nature of the case.

School lockdown

Because of the heightened police activity, Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School, located adjacent to the investigation site, was placed on lockdown shortly before 10 a.m. The Miami-Dade County Public Schools district confirmed the precautionary measure, noting that students and staff were kept safe while law‑enforcement continued their work.

School officials communicated with parents via the district’s emergency notification system, assuring them that the lockdown was a temporary safety response and that classes would resume once the area was cleared.

Community impact

Neighbors reported hearing the helicopter and seeing a significant police presence, which caused traffic delays on nearby streets. While the condition of the individual taken to a local hospital has not been disclosed, authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that public safety remains the top priority.

Residents are urged to avoid the immediate vicinity of the investigation until law‑enforcement lifts the tape. Updates will be provided as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement releases further information.

What’s next?

The investigation remains active, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will release findings when appropriate. Community members are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to cooperate with any lawful requests from investigators.
