A recent undercover investigation by pro-life advocacy group Live Action, in partnership with detransitioner Chloe Cole, has revealed that Planned Parenthood clinics across multiple states are ill-equipped to provide support for individuals seeking to detransition.
Investigation Findings
The investigation involved calls to Planned Parenthood locations in Idaho, Alaska, New York, and Washington, D.C., among other jurisdictions. In these calls, Cole posed as a patient seeking information about detransitioning after previously undergoing a gender transition. The employees described services available for patients seeking pediatric gender treatments but did not identify detransition-specific programs, treatment pathways, or clinical resources when asked about options for individuals seeking to reverse course after transition-related medical treatment.
In one call, a Planned Parenthood employee told Cole, ‘We only have pediatric gender treatments, like hormones, but not to detransition.’ When Cole asked about addressing fertility concerns or other effects associated with prior transition-related treatment, the employee responded, ‘As in right now, it’s a no, I don’t think we do that type of healthcare.’
Personal Experience
For Chloe Cole, the issue is personal. At 12 years old, she began the process of trying to change her gender from female to male. By 15, she had undergone breast removal surgery. However, she soon realized that transitioning was harming her body and began to detransition at 16.
Cole launched the investigation to understand what resources existed for patients seeking help after regretting a transition. She found that Planned Parenthood was ready to help people start transitioning but had no real answers, no meaningful support, and no services to help them reverse course.
The investigation’s findings follow a separate undercover investigation that found some Planned Parenthood locations said minors as young as 16 could obtain cross-sex hormones with limited requirements for therapy or mental-health evaluations.
