The latest agreement between the US and Iran has raised concerns over several omitted issues, including Iran’s support for terror proxies and ballistic missiles. The 14-point memorandum of understanding (MOU) does address nuclear concerns, with Iran promising not to develop nuclear weapons.
Concerns Over Omitted Issues
However, the MOU does not address Iran’s financial and material support for terror proxies, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. The Trump administration maintains that Iran’s ballistic missile stockpile and launchers have been drastically diminished, but the New York Times cited intelligence agencies that believe the Islamic Republic has maintained up to 70% of the missile launchers and stockpiles.
The agreement also does not address Iranian human rights, which the president has often cited throughout the conflict and leading up to the strikes. The MOU goes as far as prohibiting each other from interfering in each other’s internal affairs.
Next Steps
Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the 60 days of negotiations with Iran began Thursday, and agreements in the MOU have started to take effect, including the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
