The Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium has announced the name of its new lion cub. The cub has been named Kiazi, which means ‘potato’ in Swahili. This name is a playful nod to Kiazi’s father, who came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Idaho.
The Name Selection Process
According to the Zoo, 1,141 potential names were submitted, netting $5,705 in donations. Donations help support the Zoo’s ongoing animal care, conservation, and education initiatives.
Kiazi, who is now visible at the Pittsburgh Zoo, was born on April 5 to mother Scarlett and father Hondo. Prior to Hondo and Scarlett’s cub, there were three cubs born to Abana in July of 2020.
The cub’s birth is considered a major victory for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Lion Species Survival Plan.
