Atomic Books, a beloved independent bookstore in Hampden, is expanding its current location at 3620 Falls Road. The store will take over the second floor of its building, growing from 2,000 square feet to 6,600 square feet.
Expansion Plans
The expansion, set to open this fall, will allow the store to carry more of its unique offerings, including alternative comics, small press literature, and pop-culture memorabilia. Owners Rachel Whang and Benn Ray announced the plans, citing the need for more space to showcase their curated selection.
The store, known for its eclectic atmosphere and small bar, the Eightbar, has been a staple in the Hampden community for 20 years. It’s also a popular spot for author events, including those featuring Baltimore writer and filmmaker John Waters.
The expansion is a positive development for the retail district, which has seen some long-time merchants leave since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The store plans to open the second floor on weekends and by appointment, with the first floor remaining open as usual.
